About This Course

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to modern Smart Grid technologies and their role in building resilient, efficient, and sustainable power systems. Students will explore the evolution of electric grids, Smart Grid fundamentals, and the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). The course covers advanced communication systems, data analytics, and key international standards that enable secure and interoperable grid operation.

Learners will gain insights into microgrid design, energy management strategies, and demand-side management techniques that support decentralized energy models. The role of energy storage systems, virtual power plants, and hybrid storage solutions in stabilizing renewable-rich grids is also emphasized.

The course further introduces IoT technologies tailored for smart energy applications, including sensors for monitoring, automation, and consumer participation. Real-world applications such as load monitoring, smart plugs, and energy theft detection highlight the practical relevance of digital innovations in the power sector. By the end of the course, students develop a holistic understanding of next-generation power networks and the technological advancements driving the future of energy.

Dr. Rinu Alice Koshy
She holds a Ph.D. in Control Systems from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut. She completed her M. Tech from Karunya University and earned her B. Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Lal Bahadur Shasthri College of Engineering, Kasaragod. Her academic background and research experience reflect a strong foundation in advanced control strategies and biomedical engineering. Her research area focuses on Parkinson’s disease, particularly in developing intelligent control-based diagnostic and rehabilitation support systems. She is passionate about applying engineering principles to solve healthcare challenges and advance human–machine interaction. 

Ms. Renu George 

Ms. Renu George has been working as Assistant Professor since September 2011.  Her academic credentials include M. Tech degree in Guidance and Navigational Control from Kerala University in 2011 and B. Tech degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from MG University, Kottayam in 2009.

Ms. Tintu Pious 

Ms. Tintu Pious completed her B. Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam in 2017, and her M. Tech in Power Electronics from NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad in 2019. She has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering since April 2021. Her areas of interest include Power Electronics and Electrical Machines.
